Hand Made Murphy Bed
Several years ago my wife and I decided to create a Family/TV room in the unfinished half of our basement (the other half my shop). We added a half bath, suspended ceiling, customized cabinets with a desk, a built in electric fireplace and to make it a “Guest Suite”, a Murphy bed.
The hardware and basic building plans were purchased from ‘Create-A-Bed’. The hardware includes: brackets & pistons for opening and closing, hinges for the legs, & latches for keeping it closed. Included in the purchased package are ‘cut dimensions’ for the wood components. The final exterior design is left up to the individual.
The bed uses a standard queen size inner spring mattress.
The cabinet is made from 3/4 “ Oak faced plywood. I made bullnose edging and glued it to the plywood top. Where internal framing was required I chose #1 Choice pine because of its dimensional stability. Across the bottom front a pine board was added to support the base moulding. The front was trimmed out to look like doors using oak ‘Panel Moulding’ from Home Depot.
The stain I used was obtained from “KraftMaid” cabinet manufacturing company. The color is their “Autum Blush”. I wanted to match the existing design and finish of a kitchen cabinet previously built as close as possible so I took the cabinet door to our local “KDA” dealer and matched the stain. They were able to purchase a quart of the stain from “KraftMaid”. Since the kitchen project I had used this commercial grade stain on several other projects. I prefer this product for its staining characteristic and ease of use.
Two coats of ‘Coronado Aqua-Plastic Urethane’ were used for the finish. Very easy to apply, self leveling and fast drying.
Murphy bed mechanism was purchased from “Create-A-Bed”:
