Family Room Cabinetry

Several years ago my wife and I decided to create a Family/TV room in the unfinished half of our basement (the other half my shop). We added a half bath, suspended ceiling, and a Murphy bed to make it a “Guest Suite”.

To make the room more functional as well as comfortable, we decided to create storage for linens, drawers for guests to use, a desk, and installed an electric fireplace.

For this project we decided to start with quality unfinished Oak cabinets from Menards. We then made paper patterns (of their footprint) of the available sizes, which were used to determine the lay out and final design of the grouping.

The tops and desk were made from ¾” Oak plywood with 1 x 3 pine risers underneath to give it a thicker appearance, then edge finished with oak banding and oak trim.

The fireplace base was constructed using ¾ Oak plywood with solid oak added to the lower front portion for the look of a thicker appearance and then mounted it on (2) full extension drawer slides, for access to electric/electronic connections and ease of maintenance. The fireplace surround was built up around a support frame using ‘No 1 choice pine’, and partly assembled using the Kreg pocket hole ‘Master Jig System.’ The surround face is made up of solid Oak and again assembled using the Kreg pocket hole jig.

Oak Fluted Casing and Oak Rosette Moulding from Home Depot completed the fireplace.

The stain used is a commercial grade called “Autumn Blush” and was purchased from “Kraftmaid.”

Two coats of ‘Coronado Aqua-Plastic Urethane’ was used for the finish. Very easy to apply, self leveling and fast drying.

Electric fireplace was purchased from “Heat Surge”:
